Caribbean Curves

These caribbean curves deserve a wow… and/or a skateboard…

Architect Joaquin Torres of Spanish architecture firm A-cero created this idyllic Caribbean house design in the Dominican Republic as a year-round holiday hotspot where sun, sand and surf beckon. This 7,000m2, single-storey beachfront bungalow consists of two curvilinear volumes; a pair of sand-colored structures stretching upwards into the sunny sky. Arching walls of this curved roof house create architectural interest from the outside, while inside all focus in on the views. Outdoor living rooms offer endless views of the beach, where the sea breeze can be enjoyed under the shelter of the rolling rooflines. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outdoors in, but getting in isn’t as easy as you might think, with the front entrance hidden behind a series of sculptural walls, offering privacy to this peaceful Caribbean vacation house.

Art on the move

Natalya-Goncharovas-Linen-001

Visiting the next big exhibiton… looking  at the labels on the museum wall… you’ll notice a little note saying “On loan from …”, somewhere like NYC, Tokyo, Basel Switzerland or some other exotic place ;-)

Noni Stacey gives you the inside view on “Art on the move” in the Guardian.

New York Photographs

newyork-photography-front

Last winter, when the art economy was looking especially dark, a group of Manhattan photography dealers got together and decided to put on a spirit-lifting show: “New York Photographs,” a summertime tribute to the greatest city on earth.

Give me an Excuse

Should you find yourself in Florence over the summer (which, between the excessive heat and the crush of tourists is very much a case of the right place at the wrong time) then we know just the place to stay.

I know I know… Florence is over run by tourists… and over priced… but unless anybody comes up with a reasonable excuse for me to stay at Riva Lofts besides visiting Florence… I just will!

British Esquire’s summer hotel of choice is the result of a collaboration between architect Claudio Nardi and his daughter Alice, which has seen a group of buildings (some old, some new) on the outskirts of Florence transformed into design hotel heaven.

Riva Lofts might be a short taxi journey away from the centre of town but the five minute journey is repaid many times over once you reach the idyllic garden, and lie, by the pool, in the cool shade of a big tree.

We can vouch for the transformative effect an hour by the pool will have on your mood after an uncomfortably hot day sightseeing in the renaissance city.

The rooms are starkly fashionable – this is a quintessential design hotel – and the atmosphere and clientele are ice cool, but it’s the location, by the Arno river, that makes this such a winner.

Rooms from €210; www.rivalofts.com
