Feeling crafty

What some view as trash, Linda and John Meyers see as raw material. The wife-and-husband team—subscribers to the “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos—have perfected a design strategy that will save you money, help the planet, and provide hours of DIY fun. The strategy? First, visit a yard sale, construction-site dumpster, or even your own attic. Select something that somebody (even you) thought had outlived its usefulness. Then, transform that castoff into a piece that’s interesting and usable.

In this witty book, they apply their ingenious approach to seating (a chair made from pool noodles), lighting (a lamp from discarded pastry bags), storage (an umbrella stand from industrial steel pipe), tables (a wall-mounted table from a rusty basketball hoop), and all manner of decorative objects (Astroturf pillows, a pickle-jar terrarium). These super-clever authors show you that with a little ingenuity and elbow grease, everything old becomes new again.

Back to Square one?

A while back we heard that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was working on a new start-up payment service that would let users make payments from credit card accounts using their iPhones. The result is Square, and it is now open to trial users. It has a solid feature set, and works with a hardware add-on that can swipe cards. Payments are even verified using email or viewed online in real time.

Besides convenience and the obvious shiny toy factor, Square’s payment method has it’s perks for users. With Square, businesses can do things like give you a free something after a set number of repeat purchases of their products, much like punchcards. It can even donate a cent from every transaction you make to the charity of your choice.

Square has projected an estimated public rollout time for 2010.

Guess the Artist

It’s ok if you didn’t recognize Gerhard Richter right away.

Übermalte Fotografien“ (painted photographs) is an almost unknown series of work by Richter.

Gerhard Richter discovered the technique of painting on photographs by chance: whilst using photographs and newspaper clippings as a guideline for his oil paintings, he repeatedly dripped oil paints onto the photos by mistake. The resulting colour effects and the juxtaposition of the different media of photography and painting inspired him to intensely experiment with this unusual combination.
